BPTO shows expressive results in the first half of 2020.
Recently, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (‘BPTO’) has published the Performance Report, based on the first half of 2020, as well as the second version of Action Plan 2020. Even facing covid-19 pandemic, almost all the goals initially stablished for this year were maintained and an improvement on the Institute’s performance was verified when compared to the previous year.
Based on said Report, the most satisfactory outcomes were related to the combat plan against to the backlog of patents. According to BPTO, 20,675 patent applications received technical examination decisions at the first half of 2020, representing around 88% of the amount reached in 2019. Patent backlog, in turn, was reduced by 30.4%, indicating the real possibility of achieving the goal of 52% until the end of 2020.
Further, the timeframe for issuance of decisions related to requests for patent priority examination also showed an expressive result. So far, the timeframe has been reduced from 18 months (in 2019) to approximately 14 months (index very close to the proposed target for this year, which would be of 12 months).
