The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) started an alliance with CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society specialized in scientific information solutions, aiming at improving the efficiency of patent application examinations, as well as accelerating the processing of applications at the BPTO.
CAS will use data from its human curator content collection in a new artificial intelligence (AI) technology offering a set of relevant publications in order to expedite the BPTO’s examination as to the assessment of the patentability requirements. The process of data curation to the Enterprise Big Data Hub starts from the patent application publication, i.e., 18 (eighteen) months after its filing, and includes the indexation of the full text of said patent application.
According to Luiz Otávio Pimentel, the former BPTO’s president, the new technology could help examiners to identify the most relevant information, thus reducing the processing time of patent applications. In addition, CAS technology can be applied not only in the examination of applications in the chemistry field, but also in other technical fields.
Manuel Guzman, the CAS’ president, understands that such new technology, which will be first used by the BPTO, will make a difference in the patent backlog and will promote innovation worldwide.
